HEARTSAVER CPR

Course Description

The Heartsaver CPR Course teaches rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies such as cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking, including relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for adult, child, and infant victims. Students learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults, as well as breathing difficulties in children. Because the class is designed primarily for laypersons who are expected to provide CPR in the workplace, the course teaches mouth-to-mouth ventilation and rescue breathing using barrier devices, i.e. face masks with a one-way valve.

Intended Audience

The Heartsaver CPR Course is designed to teach CPR and relief or foreign-body airway obstruction to all lay rescuers, particularly those who are expected to respond to emergencies in the workplace. Participants include security guards, firefighters, police, daycare employees, baby-sitters, airline personnel, other lay rescuers who have a need to respond during an emergency.

Although this course is for lay rescuers, it is specifically designed for those who are required to obtain a course completion card (a credential) documenting successful completion of a CPR course.

Participants also learn methods to reduce death caused by Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and injuries in children.
